National Public Speaking Competition 2010-2011

The Conveners of the English Speaking Union in Ukraine have great pleasure in announcing the dates and the theme for the National Public Speaking Competition. The competition will run from 24 October 2010   until  17 January 2011 at the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Kirovograd State Pedagogical University (Room 704, 1, Shevchenko Street). The theme for the National Public Speaking Competition is ‘Lessons for the Future’.

The competition is open to students aged between 16 and 20 in full-time education at the time of the competition (the oldest possible competitor would have their 21st birthday on the 28 of May 2011). Competitors must be passport holders of Ukraine and must have a valid foreign passport or travel document. 

The winner and the runner-up of National Public Speaking Competition will represent Ukraine in the International Public Speaking Competition that will run from 23 May until 27 May 2011 in London.


Round 1

To apply for the competition a student should send his/her personal data (in Ukrainian and English) and essays (in English) by email to the address: [email protected] (Personal data:1.First name, surname2.Date of birth(day, month, year)3.Place of birth 4.Name of school/institute/university 5.Current Address 6.Email address 7.Mobile phone number 8. Number of a foreign passport/travel document)
Participants write essays on the topic Lessons for the Future’ and send them by email to the address: [email protected]
Requirements for the essay:
  • Participants may interpret the theme Lessons for the Future’ in any way they see it, but they should not use the theme as the title for the essay.
  • 250 words
  • Times New Roman 14
  • Structure of a personal opinion essay

The deadline for personal data and essays  is 24 October 2010.
The results of Round 1 will be known by 17 November 2010 and the semi-finalists will be invited to take part in Round 2 by email/mobile phone.

Round 2

  • Debate game.
  • Presentation of the speeches on the theme Lessons for the Future’.

Debates and presentations of the speeches will be held in one day.
Five possible topics for debates will be announced in advance for participants to have time for thorough preparation. They will be sent to the semi-finalists by email. The actual topic for debate will be chosen from five possible only on the day of the debate game.
Requirements for the speeches:

  • Speakers may interpret the theme in any way they see it, but they should not use the theme as the title of the speech.
  • In choosing their title, speakers should not be afraid to be provocative, hard-hitting or humorous.
  • Speakers must avoid speeches that are  likely to be perceived as diplomatic or highly political.
  • Each speaker will be allocated 5 minutes. Judges may penalise speakers who overrun. Marks will be deducted for speeches which vary more than 45 seconds either side of  5 minutes.
  • Each speech will be followed by two minutes of questions from members of the audience and the judging panel.
  • No visual aids or microphones are used by the chairperson, judges or speaker. This includes props of any kind.
  • Speakers in the final may stand on a low stage but may not use a lectern.
